Debbie Ables

Writer & Storyteller · Bardstown, Kentucky

My father named me Deborah — a Scotch-Irish name meaning sparkling and lively in strength. At 73, freshly broken and staring down a recovery that would reshape a third of my year, I had no choice but to live up to it.

I'm Georgia born and Kentucky rooted, and I've spent a lifetime collecting stories — my own and everybody else's. I believe a good story, told honestly, can carry you through just about anything. I write the kind of friendly, positive, useful stories and tips you'll want to tear out and pass along to a neighbor.

Before my fall, I was always the caretaker — always focused on everyone else first. Recovery flipped that script and taught me to walk in faith instead of fear, to be a better listener, and to let a whole village of neighbors, friends, and 200+ angel caregivers show up for me. Kindness, I confirmed, absolutely makes a difference.

Maggie

Chief Morale Officer · Border Collie

Maggie is my sweet Border Collie — Kentucky born, Border Collie smart, and a devoted student of the sacred arts of think, eat, and nap. While I was laid up in the hospital and rehab, a close friend loved on Maggie like her own.

The day I came home, Maggie wasted no time at all. She ran straight to her toy basket, grabbed her favorite toy, and brought it right to me — tail spinning like a helicopter, eyes bright with pure joy — as if to say, "You're home! Now let's play!"

If a dog who weighs less than 50 pounds believed with her whole heart that everything was going to be fine, then who was I to argue?

Maggie reminded me that recovery isn't just physical. It's emotional. It's spiritual. It's coming home to the creatures that make life worth fighting for. Life is good when Maggie's around.
